Heritage

History

The Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga has been venerated since antiquity, with references in Puranic literature and historical records of the Paramara and Maratha periods. Ujjain's position as a centre of astronomical and ritual learning added to the temple's prestige.

Today it remains a living centre of Shaiva devotion, especially during Shravan, Mahashivratri, and the Simhastha Kumbh.
